Fulham - It’s the most wonderful time of the year! ❄️🎄

Our Week in the Forest

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! ❄️🎄 At Little Forest Folk Fulham we have embraced the Christmas season and have been hard at play, designing and assembling all types of decorations and creations. You could even call us Santa’s little helpers!

We have been practicing our shape and colour recognition this week by decorating a large Christmas tree pattern. There were outlines of different coloured stars, circles, squares and triangles all over the tree and we had to decorate it by finding the matching shapes. As we found and placed the shapes over each outline, we checked to see if it had the same number of sides and corners, talking about each one with the educators. It was such a beautiful tree once it was decorated with so many colourful shapes! 🟠🟦🔺⭐

We ran into Frosty the Snowman and his family who were having a terrible time! The lack of snow meant they were feeling quite empty, so we helped out by filling them with cotton wool. We used tweezers to strengthen our grip and practice our fine motor skills while moving cotton wool from the tray to the snowmen. It took us some trial and error to find the best way to hold the tweezers but once we got in the groove it took us no time at all! The next day we had the chance to help Santa Claus. Someone had shaved off his big, white, bushy beard while he slept! His chin was going to freeze while he was out delivering presents, so we quickly got to work using the leftover cotton wool to re-create his beard. By the end he was feeling much warmer and ready to prepare for the big night! 🎅🏼⛄

Our preparations were slightly delayed by the big winds forecast for Tuesday so we packed up the workshop for the afternoon and made our way over to see the Christmas tree in All Saints Church. As we entered we were greeted by the most beautiful, rich sound! Someone was playing the church organ! We walked in silently, awed by the music reverberating through the quiet space and made our way to the glowing tree by the front of the church. There were lovely feathery birds and glittering baubles decorating the tree and we sat for a while just looking at the lights and listening to the organ. We stopped by the organist to give her a wave and say thank you for the music, we then had a chance to look more closely at the organ itself. The pipes reached all the way up to the ceiling! 🎹🎶

Later in the week, Santa’s little helpers began to create decorations for their families and loved ones. The rainbow ribbon circle was assembled to keep all observers safe and the toolshop opened up. The sound of hammering and chatter was in the air as we created tree cookie woven ornaments. After choosing a design for our weaving, we put on our safety gloves and settled into a safe hammering position. With some help from our adult elves, we carefully hammered nails into the wood into our chosen pattern. Then, we wrapped coloured string around each nail until we had created our final design. There were Christmas trees, stars, fireworks and even hearts! We were so thrilled with our hard work we couldn’t wait until Christmas Eve and showed them to our families as soon as we saw them at the end of the day. 🔨🎄

There was so much Christmas spirit in the air this week but we don’t want to forget the other celebrations that happen around this time of year across the world, so next week we will be visiting other countries to see how they celebrate this festive season. We’re excited to see what magical things we will learn!
